Delaware Governor Calls for Investments During State of the State Speech

Dover (AP) - Governor jack Markell is asking state lawmakers for $2 million to leverage federal funds aimed at boosting scientific research in Delaware.

In his State of the State address yesterday, Markell touted work being done at the University of Delaware's Science, Technology and Advanced Research, or STAR campus. 

To encourage more research efforts, Markell asked lawmakers to create a $2 million matching grant program that would leverage federal research dollars and help create jobs.

New MD Transportation Secretary to be Sworn In Today

BALTIMORE (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley is swearing in a new transportation secretary.

Jim Smith, the former Baltimore County executive, will be sworn in at a ceremony in Annapolis on Tuesday.

The position had been vacant since Beverley Swaim-Staley resigned a year ago.

The governor also will be swearing in Abby Hopper as the director of the Maryland Energy Administration. Hopper has been O'Malley's energy adviser since 2010. She

will continue in that role.

$8 Million Bailout for Delaware Casinos

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A legislative committee has agreed to give $8 million to Delaware's casinos as it wraps up work on a capital budget for the fiscal year starting July 1

The committee voted unanimously Thursday for a capital spending plan that is tens of millions of dollars higher than the $423 million plan proposed by Gov. Jack Markell in January.

MD Gas Tax Hike Moves to Senate

ANNAPOLIS (AP) - The Maryland House of Delegates is poised to vote on a measure to raise taxes on gasoline in the state for the first time in more than two decades.

The House is scheduled to vote on the bill Friday. A majority vote would send the legislation to the Senate.

The House has made some changes to the proposal made by Gov. Martin O’Malley earlier this month. The measure would still raise hundreds of millions of dollars annually, but more gradually than under the governor’s plan.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The House of Delegates is scheduled to take up a transportation funding measure.

The House is set to take up amendments on Wednesday to the bill, which would raise hundreds of millions of dollars annually in new revenue for roads, bridges and mass transit.

A House committee already has made changes to Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal to phase in a sales tax on gasoline over a longer period of time.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley is calling on lawmakers to take up the tough challenge of addressing transportation funding this session.

O'Malley is giving his seventh State of the State speech of his administration on Wednesday.

The Democratic governor also is touting investments in his budget to improve public education and build new schools. The governor's budget proposal includes $336 million for school construction.
