Producing Energy From Wicomico County Landfill

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) - Wicomico County officials are considering a plant at the county landfill to convert solid waste into energy-producing gas.

The Daily Times reports that supporters say the plant would create a new local energy source and help dispose of tons of chicken manure. County Public Works Director Lee Beauchamp and other officials met with regulators in Annapolis on Wednesday to discuss permitting hurdles for the $75 million project.

O'Malley Unveils Renewable Energy Plan

Governor Martin O’Malley is calling on the state of Maryland to up its use of renewal energy sources.

The Governor said that with the severe weather increasing in its impact along with extended trends of poor air quality “the costs of inaction would grow exponentially.”

His plan calls for increasing the amount of energy from renewable sources to 25 percent by 2020.

That’s 7 percent higher than the previous goal.

Guns To Be Allowed at Carroll County Trash Site

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) - Carroll County may soon reverse a ban on guns at the county's solid waste facilities in response to a Second Amendment group's objections.

The Carroll County Times reports that the Board of Commissioners decided without a vote Tuesday to remove the county's 1992 prohibition on allowing people to carry firearms at facilities like the Northern Landfill in Westminster. The county attorney will create an amendment to the county code.
