Writer Sonia Sanchez: Pioneer of the Black Arts Movement

Sonia Sanchez is an author, playwright and poet, who has been in the forefront of the Black Arts Movement. She has been won a number of prestigious awards including the Robert Frost Medal and Langston Hughes Poetry Award.  Her books include Homecoming, Homegirls and Handgrenades and Morning Haiku. Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush spoke with her during an appearance on the campus of Salisbury University.

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials say the former Navy reservist who gunned down 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard had a string of misconduct problems during his nearly three years in the military, but he received an honorable discharge.

Delmarva Democratic Delegation Lining up Behind the President on Syria

President Obama's address last night found Senator Ben Cardin pleased with his performance noting that Obama showed no signs of pushing for immediate action.

Cardin voted to for the resolution approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee authorizing military action.

Meanwhile, even before the President’s address his fellow Maryland Democrat Barbara Mikulski  announced that she will support the President’s request to authorize air strikes against Syria.

Federal School Ratings Questioned by Delaware Congressman

Congressman John Carney says he is concern about the new rating system that is being proposed by President Obama…that would rate colleges based on affordability and performance and would ultimately determine how federal financial aid is disbursed.

The Delaware Democrat was meeting with representatives from the state’s public and private colleges and universities yesterday.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - President Barack Obama says sexual assault threatens the "trust and discipline" that makes the U.S. military strong and respected.

Speaking at the U.S. Naval Academy commencement ceremony, Obama urged new graduates to exhibit honor and courage in tackling incidents of sexual assault as they assume leadership positions in the military.

President Visits Baltimore For Fundraisers

BALTIMORE (AP) - President Barack Obama is visiting the Baltimore area for two fundraisers.

Obama is expected to attend a lunch at the Owings Mills home of a real estate developer Tuesday and later speak at a fundraiser at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at the Inner Harbor.

Tickets for the lunch event at the home of developer Josh Fidler cost from $10,000 to $50,000. Tickets for the event downtown will range from $250 to $10,000 and organizers hope to raise $1 million.
