Democrat Mark Herring Maintains Lead in Va. Attorney General Race

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Democratic candidate for Virginia attorney general has maintained his thin lead over the Republican hopeful after the state certified the Nov. 5 ballot.

The State Board of Elections in Richmond completed its certification Monday, showing Mark Herring with a 165-vote edge over the GOP's Mark Obenshain.

Herring held a 165-vote edge over Obenshain before the certification. Obenshain has 10 days to decide whether he'll seek a recount.

TYSONS CORNER, Va. (AP) - Democrat Terry McAuliffe has been elected Virginia's next governor, defeating Republican Ken Cuccinelli after pledging to expand the state's Medicaid rolls and portraying his rival as someone who would turn back years of progress.

Turnout for Tuesday's election was low, and both candidates worked through Election Day to reach as many potential voters as possible.

Virginians Choose New Governor, Md Cities Choose Mayors

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginians are headed to the polls to elect the top three state officials and a new House of Delegates.

At the top of the ticket, Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Terry McAuliffe are battling to succeed Gov. Bob McDonnell. Cuccinelli is the attorney general, and McAuliffe is a former national Democratic Party chairman and fundraiser for Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The choices for lieutenant governor are Democratic state Sen. Ralph Northam and Republican minister E.W. Jackson.

Virginia's Same Sex Marriage Ban Challenged in Federal Court

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Norfolk couple is challenging Virginia's gay marriage ban.

Timothy B. Bostic and Tony C. London say in a federal lawsuit that they were turned down when they tried to obtain a marriage license at the Norfolk Circuit Court on July 1.

Their lawsuit argues that Virginia's unequal treatment of gays and lesbians denies them equal protection and liberties guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.

New Abortion Regulations Approved in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Board of Health has approved abortion clinic regulations that include the strict building standards that abortion-rights supporters opposed.


The board voted 13-2 Friday to enact the regulations, including a hotly contested provision that requires Virginia's 20 existing abortion clinics to meet the same architectural standards as new hospitals. Opponents claim the provision is intended to put clinics out of business. Several chanted "shame" as they left the room.
