ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Heather Mizeur, who is running for Maryland governor, has proposed a state-run retirement savings program to help workers who don't have retirement plans from their employers.

Mizeur, a Democrat, announced plans Wednesday for promoting the health, safety and security of Maryland's elderly population. She also wants to seek more funds for Alzheimer's research and create a registry of long-term care workers found guilty of abuse.

MD House Approves $39 Billion Spending Plan

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland House of Delegates has approved the state's $39 billion budget for the next fiscal year.

The House voted 100-38 Thursday.

Delegates decided to stick with a plan already approved by the Senate to address a significant drop in revenue estimates earlier this month by using $200 million in money that had been planned to shore up the long-term health of the state pension system. The plan calls for restoring the full $300 million above the required annual payment in several years.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A state delegate who's running for governor is planning a rally with marijuana reform advocates before she urges other lawmakers to decriminalize the drug.

Del. Heather Mizeur, a Montgomery County Democrat, is the lead sponsor of a bill that would make pot possession a civil offense, punishable by a $100 fine instead of arrest. Offenders under age 21 would receive drug education.

Mizeur is also sponsoring a marijuana legalization bill.

Progressive Group Endorses Heather Mizeur In MD Governor's Race

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Democracy for America, a national organization for progressive politics, is endorsing Del. Heather Mizeur's bid for Maryland governor.

Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont, founded the organization in 2004. This is the organization's first gubernatorial endorsement for the 2014 political cycle.

MD Bills to Help Homeowners Facing Foreclosure

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Two of the Maryland House's more liberal Democrats are pushing for new protections against foreclosures: a six-month freeze on foreclosures and a ban on deficiency judgments.

Aisha Braveboy, a Prince George's County delegate running for attorney general, testified for the moratorium bill Thursday before the House Environmental Matters Committee. She said it could save homeowners struggling through bureaucratic delays with banks, such as lost paperwork.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Republican Larry Hogan will use public campaign financing in the GOP primary race for governor of Maryland.

Hogan made the announcement on Monday as he formally filed to run for office with his running mate, Boyd Rutherford, in Annapolis.

To qualify for public funding for his campaign, Hogan will need to raise about $258,600 in contributions of $250 or less from individuals.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Republican Larry Hogan has officially announced he is running for governor, but he's postponing an evening event due to snow.

Hogan had initially planned to hold the event Tuesday evening, but he's postponing it to next week.

The National Weather Service says Anne Arundel County could get 6 to 8 inches of snow Tuesday.

During the administration of former Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich, Hogan was secretary of appointments. The 57-year-old real estate broker now leads a conservative, grassroots political organization called Change Maryland.

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) - Two women's groups are endorsing Delegate Heather Mizeur in her bid for the Democratic nomination for governor.

The Washington Post reports that the Maryland chapter of the National Organization for Women and the national group Feminist Majority endorsed Mizeur on Monday.

Mizeur, the only woman at the top of a gubernatorial ticket for governor in Maryland this year, has already won an endorsement from EMILY's List, a national organization known for helping female pro-abortion rights candidates raise money.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland Del. Heather Mizeur says she'll participate in the state's public financing system in next year's governor's race.

Mizeur, a Montgomery County Democrat, told The Washington Post that she wants to run a grassroots campaign and remove the influence of corporate money from politics. She is proposing banning corporate contributions and donations from those who bid for state contracts.

Mizeur is badly trailing fellow Democrats Anthony Brown and Doug Gansler in fundraising.

BALTIMORE (AP) - U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin is endorsing Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown for governor.

Cardin announced his support for Brown and his running mate Ken Ulman on Monday in Baltimore.

The Democratic senator says Brown has worked to improve Maryland schools, reduce domestic violence and create jobs to strengthen the middle class.

Brown also has won endorsements from Gov. Martin O'Malley, U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski and four of Maryland's seven Democratic congressmen for their party's nomination.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - The pastor of an African-American church in Prince George's County will be state Del. Heather Mizeur's running mate in her bid for Maryland governor.

Mizeur's campaign announced Wednesday that the Rev. Delman Coates will run for lieutenant governor on her ticket.

Coates is the pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton. In a break with some other black church leaders from Prince George's County, he was an advocate for legalization of gay marriage in Maryland.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Maryland lawmaker is calling for statewide standards relating to approaching the disabled, after a man with Down syndrome died when police tried to remove him from a movie theater.

Del. Heather Mizeur asked Gov. Martin O'Malley in a letter Tuesday to launch an investigation under the state's health department.

Mizeur, a Montgomery County Democrat who is running for governor, requested a commission be formed to design statewide standards for workforce training.

It was hot and were the politics at the J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield yesterday.

With Maryland’s state elections just around the corner next year… politicians showed up as they geared up for their campaigns.

On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown who is running for governor showed up with his running mate Ken Ulman along with competitor Heather Mizeur. 

Brown and Ulman by far had the largest contingent on hand.

Meanwhile, Republican Gubernatorial hopeful David Craig made a stop along with his running mate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Fracking opponents plan to be in Annapolis for the introduction of a bill calling for a state moratorium on the natural gas drilling technique until studies are completed on its impact.

Delegate Heather Mizeur plans to introduce the bill on Thursday. Opponents of the drilling technique also known as hydraulic fracturing plan to join her at a news conference.
