Governor O'Malley Would Veto Chicken Tax

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley says he will veto the chicken tax.

That’s a 5-cent per bird tax being proposed in the state legislature.

The Democrat made his remarks during the annual Taste of Maryland dinner and were reported on Twitter by the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that his press secretary Nina Smith issued a statement saying that the governor did not feel the chicken tax would actually strike a balance between the needs of the bay and the needs of the agriculture industry.

Proposed Chicken Tax Shocks Eastern Shore

The Eastern Shore chicken industry is reeling from a proposal in Annapolis that would impose a 5 cent tax per chicken to get big poultry companies to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay.

Worcester County Commissioner Virgil Shockley said that with more than 12 million chickens in Worcester County the cost would add up quickly.

That big money, environmental groups and some legislators say is needed to clean up the bay.

Food And Water Watch claims that poultry puts more than a billion pounds of waste into the watershed each year.

Shockley disputes that claim.
