ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Senate got an early start to work on a gun-control measure.

Senators are scheduled to convene at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, about two hours earlier than they usually gather.

They are set to debate 20 amendments to Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposal. After that, senators will have a chance to offer other changes.

Debate on the sweeping measure is expected to last most of the week in the Senate.

Governor Martin O’Malley took to the state capital to testify for his proposals that would ban assault weapons and limit magazine capacities.

The Governor told the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, “We choose to take on gun violence because life is precious.”

As the Democrat took the witness stand the National Rifle Association and conservative lawmakers drew hundreds of anti-gun control protests to a raucous rally denouncing the proposals.

MD Governor to Testify on Gun Control Legislation

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley will be testifying in Annapolis on a comprehensive gun-control measure he is backing this year.

O'Malley is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

The Democratic governor wants to ban assault weapons and create stricter licensing requirements for handguns.

The measure also includes provisions to improve the state's mental health services as a way to prevent violence. It would also set aside money in the state's capital schools budget for school safety.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell is proposing background checks for private gun sales as part of a new package of gun control legislation for Delaware.


The proposal to end the so-called gun show loophole is one of several announced by state officials Monday following the massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut last month. Other include banning military-style, assault-type weapons and ammunition clips holding more than five rounds for rifles and 10 rounds for handguns.
