Tonight's UMES Concert Canceled, Worcester County to Begin School Year Early

Today’s rescheduled Homecoming concert at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has been suddenly canceled.

Justin Thompson, the student government president told WBOC, that the cancelation was due to concerns about a lack of security for the new date.

He said he was baffled by word from the public safety department that they could not provide enough security for the event.

University officials told the television station that the Maryland State Police do not discuss their security plans.

But they would either move the concert to a later date or add it on to the spring-fest at the end of the semester.

All tickets for the original concert will be refunded.

Worcester Schools

The Worcester county school term will start after Labor day.

The decision follows a 5-to-1 vote to approved the date after years of discussions with parents, schools officials and business owners.

Superintendent Dr. Jerry Wilson expressed concerns about the change.

At a meeting of the Economic Development Committee earlier this month he said that a number of school-related activities begin before Labor Day including football practice.

WBOC reports that some parents backed an earlier date given the winter weather we’ve had so far this year.
