One Adult Fatality in Millsboro School Bus and Car Collision

Delaware State Police have released more details regarding the Thursday morning crash that involved a school bus and a car, which resulted in one fatality.

The crash occurred shortly after 7 a.m., at John J. Williams Highway and Bulls Eye Road, east of Millsboro, DE.

Officials say 63-year-old Lana Hemingway was driving a school bus, carrying seven students and traveling to Longneck Elementary School, when she stopped the bus on eastbound 24 to pick up two more children.

Hemingway did activate the stop sign and red flashing lights on the bus, but 22-year-old Michael A. Merchant, of Millsboro, failed to stop his vehicle.

Merchant’s Chevrolet Cavalier hit the back of the bus, and the front of the vehicle was wedged under the bus from the impact, trapping the man in his car.

Merchant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three children were transported to Beebe Medical Center for non life-threatening injuries.

John J. Williams Highway was closed for three hours but has since been reopened.
