Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton wearing an orange hard hat was seen yesterday in an excavator to take the first whack at an eye-soar that has plagued the city for many years.

The Thrift Travel Inn was a notorious landmark is now and is being razed after being on the auction block with no takers.

Demolition should be completed by next week.

It’s owned by United Central Bank which hired Demolition Services of Virginia to destroy the two-story building on North Salisbury Boulevard.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that an official said over the years police, fire and code enforcement officials made 16-hundred calls on the property.

It was popular haven for prostitutes and drug dealers.

The building was last occupied two years ago and has since received three condemnation notices.
